Guatemala, Day of Indigenous
Resistance
With marches, road blockades and
demands to end poverty,
exploitation and
marginalization, thousands of
Guatemalans commemorated the Day
of Dignity and Resistance of
Indigenous Peoples on Thursday.
In Guatemala City demonstrators
went from the Obelisk to the US
Embassy, denouncing the
neoliberal policies of
Washington, and where
representatives of 20 Guatemalan
and organizations from another
six countries demanded the cease
of aggressions against Cuba,
Bolivia and Venezuela.
Delegate Rafael Gonzalez,
Committee of Farmer Unity,
demanded the local government
fulfil the agreements on
identity and rights of
indigenous peoples.
On the shores of the Pacific
Ocean, hundreds of peoples
stopped highway traffic to the
border with Mexico to express
their rejection of the policies
affecting the rural population,
and in the north-western
department of Huehuetenango,
traffic was stopped to demand
end of licensing of foreign
mining enterprises
Guatemalan farmers and
indigenous only have two percent
of the land, while some
landowners have 70 percent of
the best soil in the country,
leader Aparicio Perez told
Prensa Latina.
Other marches were held in the
cities of Quetzaltenango (west),
Coban (north), and several
municipalities of the department
of Peten.
