Former Guatemala President May
Avoid Extradition
The final decision over the
extradition to Guatemala of
former president Alfonso
Portillo for embezzling funds,
is in hands of the Mexican
Executive.
The last week, Mexican Judge
Judith Sanchez ruled that there
are not enough evidence against
Portillo and suggested the
Foreign Affairs Ministry to
abandon such process.
However, Guatemalan Attorney
General Juan Luis Florido did
not recognize the decision as
neither Mexican courts nor its
chancellery officially notified
it.
For Florido, as the measure
lacks compulsory link and the
government of the Aztec nation
cannot obey it, the process
continues open.
Guatemalan courts issued an
arrest warrant against Portillo
in June 2005 because of the
anomalous transfer to the
Defense Ministry of $16 million,
from which at $4 million were
sent to accounts of his friends.
