Panama Tightens Security for
Canal Vote
A total of 12,000 police will be
displayed in Panama on October
22 for the referendum on the
expansion of the Panama Canal,
official sources said Thursday.
Rolando Mirones, director of the
Panamanian National Police,
informed that he and the
Electoral Court magistrates held
several meetings on the topic
recently to consolidate
strategies for security to be
implemented before, during, and
after the referendum.
Mirones said the security
organizations will be under the
orders of the Electoral Court
during the referendum.
More than 2.1 million
Panamanians will decide on
whether to widen the Canal, a
5.25 billion dollar project. A
green card will vote YES and a
red for NO, with partial results
known on the afternoon of the
22nd.
A Dichter Neira poll reported
63.9 percent of Panamanians in
favor of the project and 24.8
are opposed.
