Brazil's presidential election
heads for 2nd round
Brazil's presidential race has
been set to head for a runoff as
incumbent President Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva failed to win
re-election in the first round
of presidential voting on
Sunday, the country's electoral
tribunal TSE announced.
With national vote counting at
99.2 percent on Sunday, Lula
netted 48.65 percent of the
valid votes, which fell short of
the 50 percent he needed for
re-election.
On Oct. 29, Lula and his
opponent Geraldo Alckmin, who
had 41.58 percent of the votes,
will compete in the second round
of voting.
Following the end of the vote
counting in Rio de Janeiro
state, a second round of voting
for governor is also certain.
Senator Sergio Cabral, leading
with 41.42 percent of the votes,
will face Senator Denise
Frossard, who got 23.78 percent,
in the second round on Oct. 29.
Senator Marcelo Crivella, who
was ranked as another possible
adversary to Cabral, had 18.54
percent of the valid votes and
quit the race.
