Pope's Statue Unveiled
The statue of Pope John Paul II
was officially inaugurated
yesterday. The statue sits on
the southwest corner of the
Catedral Metropolitana, in
downtown San José.
The celebration began with a
Eucharist by Monseñor Hugo
Barrantes, who remembered the
support the popular Pope gave to
the Catholic church. Once the
religious ceremony concluded by
11am, the Costa Rican national
hymn filled the air, followed by
a few words by sculptor Jorge
Jiménez Deredia and San José's
mayor, Jhonny Araya.
The morning rain kept the
ceremony short, cutting
president Oscar Aria's speech,
as had been programmed and under
the rain, Costa Ricans
celebrated the tribute to the "travelling"
Pope.
