Industrialists Against New Dec
1st National Holiday
The president of the Cámara de
Industrias, Jack Liberman, said
that his members are opposed to
the government's proposal for a
new "legal" holiday, a proposal
presented before the legislature
last week that would make
December 1 a national, paid,
holiday.
The proposed law, if passed,
would not take effect until
2007.
The Cámara de Industrias said
that the changes to Articules 1
& 2 of Ley 8115 that would
declare December 1 "Día de la
Abolición del Ejército" (day
that abolished the army) - means
added costs and lost production
to private industry as well as
public institutions, especially
at a time when global
competition is fierce.
Liberman added that the date is
also at a time when industry is
in full production for the
Christmas holiday period and
would force overtime and
adjustments to production lines
to fill the orders.
The chamber president said that
industrialists respect and value
the abolition of the army by
José Figueres Ferrer in 1948,
but insist that having a holiday
to commemorate the event, in
addition to the long list of
other national holidays, is
inconvenient and costly.
Liberman added that there should
be a review of the mechanism to
create national holidays. "There
are other ways to celebrate and
commemorate historic events
without affecting production",
said Liberman.
