Ox Cart Parade Today
Looking for something to do today? A good bet is the annual Desfile de Boyeros in San José.

The annual parade of ox carts starts around 9am by the La Sabana Parque on the west end of Paseo Colón, moving along Paseo Colón, onto Avenida 2 to the Paseo de los Estudiantes and ending up at Plaza González Víquez on the south side of downtown San José.

The ox carts designed to haul coffee harvets from the fields to the docks are a traditional symbol. Ox carts and the ox have now been replaced by motor trucks and tractors.

The parade is a precursor to the other Christmas parades, the Festival de las Luces (Light Festival) and the annual Tope (December 26) and Caranaval (December 27).

This year, however, the Tope is being renamed to the Dia de el Caballista and the Carnaval has been completely scrapped.

The annual ox car parade is organized by the Grupo de Preservación de la Tradición Boyera and the Fundación de Boyeros de Costa Rica.
