Costa Rica Expects Increase of
Banana Exports
Costa Rican expects exports of
bananas to increase by
13.5 million boxes. This
increase can mostly be
attributed to a strong increment
of production.
This year a total sales volume
of 102.1 million boxes is
expected, while last year this
volume amounted 88.6 illion.
This increase generates an
additional us$77 million dollars
in income of foreign currency
for Costa Rica, as each box has
an average value of us $5.70.
According to Corbana director
Jorge Sauma, growers have made
an enormous effort to improve
the productivity per hectare.
This has increased from 2155
boxes per hectare per year in
2005 to 2400 per hectare in
2006.
Another factor was a rescue plan
from the government, aimed at
plantations who were in
difficulties, but which did have
production potential. Also
positive weather conditions have
had a favourable effect on
production.
