Profitable Environmental
Protection
Fifty visitors from Colombia,
Switzerland, Denmark, and the
United States toured Rafael
Serrano’s small coffee farm,
where he showed the visitors how
protecting the environment
improved his plantation and that
accounts for more income.
Serrano’s is one of 450 small
coffee plantations in the Orosi
area, Cartago, which partake in
a program that promotes farming
in harmony with nature, and with
the best quality of grains.
The program is developed through
an agreement between the
environmental Rainforest
Alliance and Nespresso, an
international coffee marketing
firm which is a branch of
Nestle.
Nespresso is a division of
Nestlé, concentrating of the
high-end of the coffee market.
Nespresso products range from
patented coffee-capsule
technology and the associated
machinery, to the actual coffee
capsules.
