Water To Be More Costly In The
New Year
The Instituto Costarricense de
Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AyA)
- nations supplier of water and
sewers - says it is planning an
increase in water rates by as
much as 30% to its some 500.000
users.
The institution says it plans to
make the request formally to the
Autoridad Reguladora de los
Servicios Públicos (Aresep) next
month and have the increase
approved to be charged early in
the new year.
If the approval is granted by
the Aresep, the increase will an
increase of ¢1.350 colones for
the use of 24 cubic metres of
water, bringing the current cost
of ¢4.500 to ¢5.850. Commercial
users pay more for each cubic
metre of water used.
Ricadro Sancho, president of the
AyA, said that the increase is
necessary to offset rising costs
in operations and the increase
will be between 24% and 30%.
Sancho added that the
institution will also be asking
for an increase in the sewer
rates that will see the minimum
residential rates go from the
current ¢545 to ¢710. The sewer
rates are tied in as a
percentage of the water
consumption.
