Widening of Sabana Sur Route To
Start in January
The widening of the road that
leads from the Pops to the
MacDonalds in the Sabana will be
begin in January, accoriding to
the Consejo Nacional de Vialidad
(Conavi).
The busy two lane road that runs
adjacent to the south side of
the railawy will be widened to
four lanes to easy traffic jams
that are a daily problem.
However, beginning next week,
work crews will be out to begin
moving the posts carrying
electrical, telephone and cable
services, as well as water and
sewer pipes so that the actual
widening of the road can begin
in the new year.
Alejandro Molina, director of
Conavi, said the widening is
necessary due to the increase of
traffic in the area. The road is
one of two main routes to Escazú
and other points west.
Molina said the widened road
will include bus stop bays,
protective barriers to separate
traffic from the railway and
four pedestrian crossings with
traffic lights.
The work will mean partial
closings of the existing road as
the obstacles to the new roadway
are cleared and cables are
buried. Once that phase of the
work is complete, a temporary
road will allow traffic to move
while the main widening
construction continues. Molina
added that during the final
phase of the construction, the
route will be completely closed
to through traffic.
The cost of the construciton is
˘3.5 billion colones (us$6.8
million dollars) which has been
awarded to the consortium Santa
Fe-Holcim, SA, and will take
nine months to complete.
