Guatemala Concern on US Immigrants
The Guatemalan government and society were concerned about the situation immigrants are currently facing in the United States, from where over 13,000 people have been expelled this year.

"Ten percent of our population in that northern country are involved in an issue that concerns us because it has enormous social, economic and cultural implications," Foreign Minister Gert Rosenthal said.

The foreign minister was questioned by press after the Union of Guatemalan Immigrants denounced in this capital the imminent danger of deporting 30,000 people, due to the tightening of US laws.

Although Rosenthal stated that the country could not influence on the US legislation, it promised to do everything possible to avoid abuses and outrages.

About 1,300,000 Guatemalans are currently living in the US, more than a half of them illegal, and their remittances allow for survival of one third of the Guatemalan total population.
