Torrijos Thanks Guatemalan
President for Support
Panamanian President Martin
Torrijos made a brief private
visit to Guatemala to thank his
Guatemalan counterpart, Oscar
Berger, for the postulation of
Panama for a temporary post on
the UN Security Council.
In his half hour meeting,
Torrijos spoke with Berger and
Vice President Eduardo Stein
about other topics as well,
including regional integration.
Torrijos´ trip came hours after
Panama was elected for a
non-permanent post in the UN
Security Council by 164 of the
192 countries forming the
General Assembly.
The proposal of Panama was
agreed upon in delicate
negotiations between Venezuela
and Guatemala as a compromise
after neither of them reached
the necessary two-thirds votes
in 47 rounds.
Guatemalan Foreign Minister Gert
Rosenthal reasserted the
aspirations of Guatemala to take
the seat and said his country
will present its candidature in
2011.
