Costa
Rica - Panama Border To Be
Defined
Travelling to the southern
border that divides Costa Rica
and Panama can be sometimes
confusing, for the border line
between the two countries is not
marked and defined. For that
reason, a group of Costa Rican
and Panamanian officials have
taken on the task of defining
the "real" border and properly
marking it.
The need to define the border
line is a result of problems in
the area for some time,
especially in the municipality
of Corredores, where there has
been construction of "chinamos"
and stores on both sides of the
border without having a defined
border.
Corredores mayor, César Moya,
said that it is important which
businesses are in Costa Rica and
which are not, so that they can
issue the respective licenses,
especially in the case of the "chinamos"
- food stands - so that proper
health permits can be issued and
notice given if in contravention
of health regulations.
The same thing is happening on
the Panamanian side.
Rosa Amayas of the Programa
Nacional de Administración de
Tierras, Pronat and José Armando
Lugo, Cambronero del Instituto
Geográfico Nacional (IGN), are
proposing using GPS (Global
Positioning Systems) in place of
"mojones" or boundary stones.
GPS will permit the use of
satellite to supervise the
border.
