Nicaragua Edgy after Student
Threats
Nicaraguan university students
have stoked the prevailing
social tension Thursday by
announcing they will continue
protesting in support of
striking doctors and demand a
solution to the transport issue.
Wednesday, dozens of young
people armed with mortars set up
barricades using the street´s
paving stones on a Managua
avenue.
Physicians, who have been
striking for six months for a
decent wage, joined the students
at the barricades and said they
will be satisfied if, in a
five-year period, their salaries
are made compatible with those
of their Central American
colleagues.
The action ended without brawls,
although three hooded young
people set a vehicle afire,
which caused police to tighten
their presence around the
Nicaraguan National University.
Faced with authorities´ failure
to respond, the students
announced they will also protest
the rise of transport fees,
which could lead to a conflict
with truckers.
