Taiwan
And Costa Rica To Better
Relations
One of the first "official"
visitors to the temporary Casa
Presidencial, the home of
president Oscar Arias, in
Rohrmoser, was Taiwanese
president, Chen Shui-bian.
President Arias said following
the private meeting that the two
discussed increasing commercial
relations between the two
countries. "We spoke in
bilateral terms, on how to
better relations between our two
countries. I thanked the
president in the name of all
Costa Ricans for all the help he
has provided in building our
infrastructure", said Arias.
Arias added that the Taiwanese
have reconfirmed their support
to donate us$15 million dollars
to help rebuild the Hospital
Calderón Guardia. The commitment
was originally made during the
Pacheco administration following
a fire that destroyed a part of
the hospital building last year.
Arias said that he and president
Chen spoke about the possibility
of Taiwan making other important
contributions to education,
public security and
infrastructure.
Costa Rica and Taiwan have had
great mutual relations and that
is expected to continue, saying
the criticism from Peking is
"something natural".
The government of Taiwan
contributed to the building of
the Tempisque bridge in
Guanacaste and to building the
road to San Carlos, among many
of the projects the Taiwanese
have contributed to in Costa
Rica.
