Arias
and Solís Finally Meet
Following a hard fought election
and close finish, the two
rivals, Partido Liberación
Nacional (PLN) leader Oscar
Arias and Partido Acción
Ciudadana (PAC) leader, Ottón
Solís, finally met face to face.
President-elect Arias invited
Solís for a chat at his home,
which according to reports,
Solís understood it would be
centred on discussions over the
Tratado de libre comercio (TLC)
- free trade agreement with the
United States.
However, the meeting was for
Arias to tell Solís that the
agreement cannot be renegotiated
and that Solís misunderstoo the
written message. Solís and the
PAC campaigned that they would
be re-negotiate the TLC if
elected.
"I feel like this is a bad joke,
but I can never get upset with
someone being sincere. I am sad
because there was no dialogue
for the possibility of
renegotiations like I read in
the message", said Solís.
The meeting lasted some 2 hours
and 15 minutes and publicly both
men said they are open to
continued dialogue over other
topics, topics that are of
benefit to the country and the
people.
Arias will form the new
government come May 9, taking
over from Abel Pacheo. However,
Arias and the PLN does not a
clear majority in the
Legislature and Arias will need
to keep dialoguing with the PAC
and other smaller parties if he
is to get any important
legislation passed.
