Another Holiday to the 2006
Calendar
May 8, the day set for the
official transfer of power, as
president Abel Pacheco hands
over the keys to Casa
Presidencial to Oscar Arias,
public employees will have the
day off, meaning all government
offices and agencies will be
closed that day.
Roberto Tovar, Costa Rica's
Chancellor, announced that the
ceremony will take place at the
Estadio Nacional, in La Sabana.
The location was a personal
choice of Arias, the same
location that Arias was crowned
back in 1986.
Tovar added that the invitation
list is being readied, with
invitation to international
government and organizations
that have relationships with
Costa Rica will be out in the
next couple of days.
The Comisión de Traspaso de
Poderes met on Tuesday this week
which included representatives
of the Ministerio de Relaciones
Exteriores (Foreign Ministry),
the future administration of
Oscar Arias, which includes the
future Foreign Minister to
replace Tovar and the current
Costa Rican ambassador to the
United Nations, Bruno Stagno.
Roberto Tovar, who chaired the
meeting, confirmed that the
'transfer of power' will be held
at the Estadio Nacional and not
the Teatro Melico Salazar, the
location that saw the crowing of
Pacheco.
Tovar added that in addition to
the thousands of Costa Ricans
and foreign diplomats, Arias
wants to include a number of
Nobel prize winners as well,
though no names were released.
A number of hotels rooms will be
"blocked off" for the event,
ensuring foreign visitors a
place to stay in a ceremony that
is to cost some ˘100 million
colones (us$200.000).
