Salvador Mining Damages
Environment
Human Rights Joint Official for
Environmental Protection Yanira
Cortez Thursday affirmed that
mining exploitation in El
Salvador is damaging the
environment and putting the
population at risk.
The action of foreign companies
in this Central American nation
violates the peoples´ right to
an undamaged ecosystem and acts
against the physical integrity
of present and future
generations.
The irrational use of natural
resources provokes harmful
diseases, particularly on the
skin and lungs, she asserted and
described the ingestion of
polluted water to which
populations close to the mines
are exposed, as the worst effect
on human health.
She called to guarantee an
undamaged environment for the
entire population and prevent
the implementation of mining
projects in detriment of such
aims.
