Venezuela Buys New Weapons for Defense
Venezuela is preparing to defend itself from continuous and increased US threats, asserted President Hugo Chavez. in a ceremony Wednesday to provide the Armed Forces with Kalashnikov rifles bought from Russia.

We do not plan to invade any nation, the entire world knows this well, noted Chavez, saying those who point to Venezuela as a threat are the very people who have always threatened the planet.

The president of the Bolivarian Revolution called the handover of 33,000 rifles “historic” and “a victory over US attempts at domination.”

They will not subdue us, they will have to kill us all to control this nation, we have decided to be free and we will stick to that commitment, Chavez asserted.

He referred to the July 5 visit of Russian Army member Mijail Kalashnikov, who created this type of rifle. The military guest will attend activities for the anniversary of Venezuelan independence.

Chavez praised the characteristics of the rifles and said they will change the concept of military equipment, as his nation has been very dependent on powerful nations such as the US.

Chavez´ remarks were supported by Defense Minister Orlando Maniglia, who stated that talks to buy a certain quantity of Russian Sukhoi warplanes would begin soon.

Maniglia said the goal was to replace the US F-16 warplanes, as they are obsolete.

He also referred to US actions to block spare part supplies and maintenance services for the F-16s.
