Guatemala Protests Transnat
Sacking
Guatemalan indigenous,
campesinos and environmentalists
are staging Wednesday in
Guatemala City a protest march
against mining transnationals
that sack their natural
resources without benefiting the
communities.
The demonstration is part of the
Central American day against
mining damage, which includes
forums, community encounters and
visits to areas in Honduras, El
Salvador and Guatemala where
deposits are being exploited to
the detriment of the
environment.
Campesino leader Juan Tiney
denounced that Canadian Montana
Company has been extracting gold
for months offering neither jobs
nor development for the
communities.
He reminded that a year ago
settlers of Sipacapa and Rio
Hondo, where the deposit is
located, expressed rejection in
a referendum of mining works for
polluting their water sources.
On Sunday, in communities of San
Marcos province, where Montana
operates, there will be a
protest to demand that Central
American governments comply with
the International Labor
Organization´s Convention
No.169.
That agreement guarantees
indigenous peoples the right to
the referendum and participation
in important decisions for their
communities.
