Guatemala Doctors on Strike
Doctors from the Roosevelt
hospital, in the Guatemalan
capital, have been on strike for
five days demanding wage
increases and medical supplies.
The doctors have been protesting
the lack of medicines and
materials which, according to
them, has resulted from the
hospital´s debt to suppliers.
Roosevelt, the country´s second
most important hospital, with
capacity for nearly 900
inpatients, is providing care
only for emergency cases and
intensive care wards.
The doctors´ trade union has
also urged the health ministry
to meet the collective agreement
signed last February, when
authorities pledged a 25 percent
increase in wages.
