Guatemala Unions Closing Ranks
Guatemalan trade unions should
bring forward a new model to
face the challenges of the
imminent free trade agreement
with the US, experts agree.
Miquele Marsicovetere, director
of the Mario Lopez Larrave
Foundation, dedicated to work
studies and union training said
the workers´ movement must
strengthen in the face of that
commercial threat.
"We have seen how the US has
been imposing trade regulations
from abroad," the expert stated,
but expressed optimism on the
future of the movement
nationwide.
"Unionism is growing, both in
members and organizations, and
the most interesting thing is
that it is also getting into the
informal sector of the economy,"
affirmed Marsicovetere.
Apart from the free trade
agreement, the Guatemalan
government and large private
companies are arranging several
initiatives to hinder as much as
possible resistance from the
union sector, expert Mariano
Garrido warned.
