Alan Garcia: 68th Peru President
Although the official
proclamation will be in a few
days, Alan Garcia, of the
Peruvian Aprista Party, is
Tuesday the 68th president-elect
of Peru.
Latest reports of the National
Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE),
with 95.6 percent of the ballots
tabulated, gave Garcia 54.69
percent of the valid votes and
Union for Peru (UPP) runner
Ollanta Humala 47.23.
With that figure, the Aprista
leader has an almost unreachable
705,646 vote lead.
To defeat his rival, Humala must
get 95 percent of the over
738,000 ballot papers still to
be counted.
However, the ONPE will wait for
all the voting stations to
officially proclaim Garcia, who
is returning to the presidency
after 16 years.
