Central America Ministers Meet
on Energy
Chancellors and Energy Ministers
from SICA (Central American
Integration System) and the
MesoAmerican Energy Initiative
began meeting Friday in the El
Cacique resort in the Dominican
Republic.
Besieged by hundreds of
international journalists, the
Central American ministers from
Panama, Belize, Colombia, Mexico
and host Dominican Republic are
maintaining absolute silence
while they study 12 proposals
SICA presidents will examine
tomorrow concerning a regional
oil refinery.
They are also discussing the
electricity question for a
sub-regional technical
cooperation agreement to improve
generation, as well as
international financing of
renewable energy, as per the
Kyoto Protocol to protect the
environment.
The Heads of State and
Government, expected to begin
arriving Friday evening amid
strong security, are Presidents
Martin Torrijos, Panama; Enrique
Bolanos, Nicaragua; Manuel
Zelaya, Honduras; Oscar Berguer,
Guatemala; Antonio Saca, El
Salvador and Oscar Arias, Costa
Rica.
President Vicente Fox, Mexico;
Alvaro Uribe, Colombia; Leonel
Fernandez, Dominican Republic,
and Prime Minister Said Musa,
Belize will also participate in
the summit.
