Couple Were Major Dealers in Crack
Who says crime doesn't pay. At least for while it lasts. That was the case of a married couple, detained by police on Thursday, for selling up to ¢1 million colones (us$2.000) of crack daily in the areas of Barrio Cuba and Hatillo Centre, in San José.

The couple specialized in crack, but added to their income by supplying their customers with cocaine, primarily to youngsters in the poor neighbourhoods.

According to police, the couple had been in business for more than a year, when the Policía de Control de Drogas (PCD) del Ministerio de Seguridad Pública decided to finally put an end to the illicit trade.

During the raid on the homes of the couple, police found 928 hits of crack and an unspecified amount of cocaine. Police also confiscated a vehicle that was used for the distribution of the narcotic, several cellular telephones and some ¢173.000 colones in cash.

A PCD spokesperson said that the capture of the couple had been a priority due to the high quantity of crack the couple was moving. Police followed the movements of the couple for weeks, collecting evidence of the large business volume, following the arrest of one the main sellers for the couple on May 19.

The PCD spokesperson added that during the first five months of this year, 96 drug traffickers have been detained - 73 being Costa Ricans and 23 were foreigners.
