Mexico Hosts Emigration Confab
Mexico and another 15 countries
opened the Process of Helsinki
on International Emigration,
with the notable absence of the
US.
Algeria, Brazil, Ecuador, El
Salvador and India, among other
nations, plus international
organizations will draft a
document to be submitted to the
UN General Assembly in
September.
The goal is to secure a space on
the UN agenda for emigration and
continue the debates on this
topic, since the movement of
people in the past two years
stand as a challenge that needs
to be addressed.
Ulises Canchola, director of the
UN System for Mexico´s
Foreign Relations Office, warned
of the need to prevent treating
immigrants as merchandise.
The Process of Helsinki was an
initiative of Finland and
Tanzania in the 1970s to discuss
key issues like immigration and
governability.
It was re-launched in 2003 in an
attempt to breach the
North-South gap on democracy and
globalization.
