"Romeria" Begins Friday; Red Cross Ready
All is set for the coming "romeria" - pilgrimage - to Cartago on August 1 and 2. This year many more than usual are expected with the holiday on July 31. While the majority of the "romeros" will be walking on Tuesday and Wednesday, a small number have already begun their pilgrimage, many will be making the annual walk to Cartago over the weekend.

Last year 3.684 people were attended by the members of the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) while walking to the Basílica de Los Ángeles en Cartago to demonstrate their faith to the Virgen de Los Angeles.

This year, according to Guillermo Arroyo Chacón, the Cruz Roja says it will have a total of 41 posts to provide first aid, of which 13 posts will be fixed, with some 1.600 "cruzrojistas" - red cross workers - to attend to the needs of the walkers.

The Red Cross operation will begin this Friday and will last until next Wednesday.

Some advice for walkers:

- Dress comfortably with loose clothing. Colours should be bright.

- This is the rainy season, bring an umbrella.

- If you are suffering from any illness, check with your doctor beforehand

- Bring along food rich in potassium, like bananas, and water
