Guanacaste Celebrates Anniversary, While Legal Holiday is Next Monday
Nicoya was the centre of attention yesterday as it celebrated its anniversary of annexation when Guanacaste became part of Costa Rica.

President Oscar Arias and his ministers and government officials were on hand for the celebrations that occurred in all corners of Guanacaste.

The Recaredo Briceño park was temporarily converted into the seat of government for the day, the president nd his ministers were on hand to make promises to the people of this once remote province.

One of the most important promises was to keep July 25 the national holiday for the celebration of the anniversary.

Last year, the Pacheco government issued a decree that a number of holidays that fall in the middle of the week would be celebrated the following Monday. Although most of Guanacaste was celebrating yesterday, Monday July 31 is the legal holiday.

Many "Guanacastecos" were not happy with the change and made their sentiments known yesterday to the president and the television cameras. The residents of the area feel this is an important holiday and it should be celebrated on the 25th and not on any other day.
