Remittances to Guatemala on Upswing
Money sent by Guatemalans abroad increased in the first half of 2006 by 21 percent compared to last year, according to the Bank of Guatemala.

The nation received 1.75 billion dollars between January and June, more than the 1.447 million in the same span in 2005, the bank informed.

Economic and Social Research Association analyst David Cristiani asserted that remittances are likely to climb to 4 billion dollars if the trend continues.

Remittances account for 10 percent of the GDP in Guatemala, benefiting 3,700,000 people.
