Costa Ricans Among The Happiest
In The World
Costa Rica is the country in the
world most happy, next to the
Islands of Vanuatu, an
archipelago of 83 islands
located in the South Pacific
Ocean and Colombia, according to
the New Economics Foundation (NEF).
The new economics foundation) is
an independent British
think-tank, or, in their own
description, a "think-and-do
tank". It publishes "The
(un)Happy Planet Index",
an index of human well being and
environmental impact.
According to their website, The
(un)Happy Planet Index is an
innovative new measure that
shows the ecological efficiency
with which human well-being is
delivered around the world. It
is the first ever index to
combine environmental impact
with well-being to measure the
environmental efficiency with
which country by country, people
live long and happy lives. The
results are surprising, even
shocking, but there is much to
learn from what they show.
In the list of countries in the
World in rank of the HPI order,
Costa Rica in third place with a
score of 66.0, while Vanuatu in
first place scored 68.2 and
second place Colombia scored
67.2.
Neighbouring countries scored
lower. Panama placed 5th with a
score of 63 and Nicaragua was
18th with a 44.1. Brazil
was 63rd and Argentina 47th.
Canada placed 110th, while the
United States placed 149th.
The group's goal is to promote
their progressive view of
welfare economics and
environmentalism. Their reports
have been criticized by
strategic advisers to retailers
such as Fripp Sandeman and
Partners.
NEF was founded in 1986 by the
leaders of The Other Economic
Summit, an "alternative" to the
G8 summit. Their funding sources
come from charitable trusts,
public finance—National Lottery,
businesses, international
grant-making bodies and
individual supporters with
membership fees.
