Defends Bolivian Senator
President of Bolivia Evo Morales
defended government party
Senator Leonilda Zurita on
Thursday before the
international community. Zurita
was prevented from entering US
territory due to "suspicion of
terrorism".
We are neither terrorists nor
drug traffickers, Morales said
in a speech to thank the
diplomatic corps accredited to
La Paz, as he referred to the
conflict provoked by the measure
applied against the legislator
from the governing Movement
towards Socialism (MAS).
In a departure from his
customary media appearances, US
Ambassador David Greenlee missed
this ceremony, which added fuel
to reports of a crisis in
bilateral relations.
Morales expressed his concern
and "the pain of my people"
because of what he called a
veto, marginalization, exclusion
or punishment suffered by his
old comrade-in-struggle, who was
refused entry to the US.
Meanwhile, Presidential
spokesman Alex Contreras said
the Foreign Ministry will
request an explanation from the
US government in view of the
measure applied against one of
Bolivia"s most outstanding
popular leaders.
Morales said that his
government"s foreign policy is
focused on Bolivia"s sovereignty
and dignity, with links based on
respect, solidarity and
reciprocity.
