Panama Canal project to create
up to 10,000 new jobs
The project of expanding the
Panama Canal's navigation
capacity could create between
8,000 and 10,000 new jobs,
Manuel Benitez, deputy head of
the Canal Authority,s aid on
Wednesday.
The construction and operation
sectors would benefit most from
the project, and Panamanians
"have the skill to take on any
challenge, but we need to play
our part," he said.
About 30 different waterway
widening proposals have been
considered, with the canal board
opting to build pools on either
side of the canal, given the
high social cost of building
dams in areas close to the
canal, he said.
The expansion project would cost
more than 8 billion U.S.
dollars, and Panama would need
to hold a referendum on whether
to launch it, Benitez added.
