Leatherbacks Lure Tourists
A large number of tourists come
to watch the arrival of
leatherback turtles which come
to span at Langosta, Grande,
Carbon, and Ventana, among other
beaches in the Santa Cruz
Canton, Guancaste, on the Costa
Rican North Pacific.
The arrival
of the leatherbacks -that hail
back to the Jurassic and were
contemporary of the dinosaurs-
takes place October through
March.
The visits are controlled
by Las Baulas Marine Park
wardens, in order not to harm
the spawning of the endangered
species, for which this
Guanacaste beaches are among its
very few spawning areas in the
world.
Park sources said that a
majority of the visitors from
abroad come from Europe and the
United States.
