Guatemala Recognizes Cuban
Doctors
The Cuban Medical Brigade was
acknowledged as Figure of the
Year 2006 for its collaboration
in Guatemala, according to
editors, journalists and
photographers of Siglo Veintiuno
newspaper.
The front page of the newspaper
Siglo Veintiuno published a
picture of the doctor Yoandra
Muro, head of the Cuban Medical
Brigade, with the phrase: "We
come to Guatemala to share not
to compete."
The personnel of Cuban health
have saved 229,145 lives and
carried out more than 56,000
operations since 19 cooperators
arrived on November 5, 1998 as a
result of the hurricane Mitch.
Nowadays, Cuban physicians help
in 17 of the 22 departments of
that country and two million and
a half of people are treated in
in places of difficult access
and low resources.
The infant mortality rate has
been reduced from 40.2 to 21.4
for every thousand born alive in
the communities thanks to the
achievements of Cuban Medical
Brigade.
