Pollution in Nicaragua Lake
The lack of a health policy and
a law of Waters are among the
causes of pollution in lake
Nicaragua or Cocibolca, the
third biggest of Latin America,
local experts reported.
The main sources of pollution
are in the coast that skirts the
city of Granada, 31 miles south
of Managua, according to the
local press.
Large bacteria concentrations,
due to the spillage of sewer
waters draining in the lake were
detected in that strip along the
banks of that tourist resort and
colonial city.
The research showed an increase
in the PH level of water as a
result of the indiscriminate use
of agro-chemicals in neighboring
areas.
Another factor of pollution is
the waste that brings the river
Tipitapa from the Managua Lake
which has been totally infected
for the last 50 years.
The specialist´s complaints also
concern the National Assembly
that keeps paralyzed the
discussion of the Law of Waters
since a year ago. The
legislation would facilitate
taking formal measures against
the deterioration of the
country´s water resources.
