French President to Visit Panama
The French President Jacques
Chirac will visit Panama in
March, to talk about commercial
issues, especially the Canal
extension, official sources
reported.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel
Lewis stated that the president
will be accompanied by an
important delegation of
businesspeople.
The bonds between both countries
are from 1883, when the French
engineer Ferdinand de Lesseps,
creator of the Suez Canal in
Egypt, began the building of the
Panamanian inter-oceanic road.
The Lesseps Company went
bankrupt due to the Panama
geographical and climatic
conditions and millions in
embezzlements, and the US
occupied its place.
The Panamanian approved the
extension of the Canal, project
valued in 5.25 billion dollars
on October 22.
