Guatemalan Terrorist Arrested in Panama
The Panamanian police arrested a man assumed to be Guatemalan ex-Minister of Interior Donaldo Alvarez, accused of state terrorism, torture and genocide, La Prensa daily revealed on Thursday.

The individual, using the name Eduardo de Diego, was located in an apartment on Venetto Road in Panama City.

While his identity is being verified with Guatemalan authorities, the subject is being held in the facilities of the Judicial Technical Police.

Alvarez is charged with attacking the Spanish Embassy in 1980, an act in which 36 people died, including the father of Nobel Peace Prizewinner Rigoberta Menchu, as well as other crimes.

The criminal was Guatemala Minister of Interior from 1978 to 1982 and is also accused of commanding the death squadrons that left thousands of dead in his country.

In December 1999, Menchu denounced Alvarez for genocide, terrorism and torture before the Spanish Audience.
