Colombian police arrest town mayor meeting with paramilitaries
Colombian police have arrested Nazly Zambrano, the mayor of a town, during his meeting with paramilitaries from the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), media reports said on Wednesday.

Zambrano, mayor of Algarrobo, a town in the Magdalena department, was arrested in a farm when he was meeting with the Aguilas Negras (Black Eagles), a guerrilla group that grew out of the AUC forces.

The Magdalena Carabineros, an armed police group, killed three paramilitaries and arrested nine people, including Zambrano during the operation.

At least 19 Black Eagles paramilitaries have been arrested in 2006 till date.

The Organization of American States (OAS), which is monitoring Colombia's peace process with paramilitary groups, has condemned the emergence of paramilitary groups, which appear to be focused in areas bordering the Ecuadorian and Venezuelan frontiers.

The Colombian government began a peace process with the AUC in 2003, and the vast majority of the country's 31,000 AUC paramilitaries have handed in their weapons and and returned to civilian life.
