US Invasion of Panama Dissected
The US invasion of Panama in
1989 was a unilateral action and
a brutal violation of
international law, and served
mainly to reaffirm Washington's
control on the Canal Zone,
analyst Julio Yao denounced on
Wednesday.
After 17 years since the
aggression, Yao said that this
was the largest military
operation carried out by the
Pentagon since the Vietnam war.
About 40,000 GIs, with the most
sophisticated technology,
launched 300 planes and
helicopters against 3,000
badly-armed Panamanian soldiers,
stated the analyst.
Yao does not know the official
figure of victims, "because none
of the Panamanian governments
has done an objective
investigation since."
However, he added, several US
institutions state there were
300 or 400 victims, but some
independent entities say there
could have been up to 7,000.
Also included are several tens
of thousands displaced people,
especially after the destruction
of "El Chorrillo" highly
populated neighborhood, Yao
stated.
