No Christmas Party For
Legislators
The government in showing its
policy of restraint of waste of
public funds announced yesterday
that Legislators will not have
their annual party, where food
and liquor, costing millions of
colones, go to waste, ending a
tradition of the past
legislatures.
The president of the Legislative
Assembly, Francisco Antonio
Pacheco, became the "party
poop", making the announcement
yesterday that there would be no
annual party at the plush Club
Union in downtown San José.
Pacheco assures that the
decision to cancel the party is
a correct one.
"The deputies will not have a
Christmas party due to
austerity. In the country there
is much poverty and the
government has to, for
conviction, make this decision.
Like many things, some like are
happy while other are not, at
the decision", said Pacheco.
The head of the legislature said
he has no idea of how unpopular
the decision is, adding to his
comments that he is refusing to
make that information public of
which legislators are unhappy
with his decision.
The savings for not holding the
party is ˘6 million colones
(us$11.600 dollars).
In the past, legislators, staff
and friends gathered for a night
of food and drinks, paid for by
taxpayers. This year, the Arias
government wants to set an
example and what better way than
to not waste taxpayers money on
an event for the well to do.
Earlier this week, it became
public that president Arias is
donating a portion of his
"presidential" income to the
needy.
