16 injured in clashes between
Peruvian police, protestors
Protestors clashed with police
in Peru's southern province of
Apurimac on Tuesday, leaving 16
people injured and two of them
seriously.
Protestors gathered in the
provincial capital of Abancay,
demanding the resignation of
municipal chief of Abancay, Rosa
Suarez, who was criticized for
transgressing the law and
impairing public interests.
The clashes began when the
demonstrators in high spirits
started demolishing the
infrastructure facilities and
private property.
Immediately after the clashes,
Peruvian Prime Minister Jorge
Del Castillo declared a state of
emergency in Abancay for 30
days.
Speaking at a press conference
in the capital city of Lima, he
said those who were arrested for
destroying public and private
properties in the protest will
probably face six to eight years
in prison.
