Panama Poison Death Toll
Polemical
Although Panamanian authorities
estimated that the death toll
for consuming poisoned medicine
is 48, the issue is object of a
national debate in the middle of
denunciations based on the real
amount.
The Inter Institutional Health
Ministry Technical Committee and
the Social Security Fund (CSS)
latest report noted the
government is hiding the real
data.
According to the spokesman of
the Committee of Patients and
Family Victims Gabriel Pascal
the number of deceased could be
as high as 90.
In his opinion there are many
cases at CSS facilities with
intoxication symptoms from
poisoned medicine but they have
not been counted yet.
Panama judicial authorities
received aid from their Spanish
counterpart to investigate
Rasfer S.A., an enterprise owned
by Spain.
That firm sold Medicon Panama
Medicine Consortium 40 barrels
of an allegedly pure glycerine
used as raw material to produce
drugs, but it really contained
dietileneglicol.
Until now there are seven
citizens arrested, four of them
are CSS workers.
