Guatemalan Victims Demand
Justice
Humanitarian organizations and
those of victims of the internal
armed conflict in Guatemala have
demanded arrest warrants against
several soldiers for genocide
and denounced current harassment
of their activists.
In a news conference in front of
the Supreme Court, they said
this has all documentation to
endorse the detention requests
and final extradition of ex
Dictator Efrain Rios Montt, ex
Head of State Oscar Mejia
Victores and Ret. Gen. Lucas
Garcia for ordering murders,
abductions and disappearances
during the clash.
We would hope that the
Guatemalan courts had the
strength to carry out those
processes, but we are aware of
their weakness and so we resort
to universal jurisdiction,
declared Miguel Angel Alvizurez
to Prensa Latina.
The head of the Legal Action
Center for Human Rights
considered it urgent to fight
for an efficient judicial system
or on the contrary, the country
would move toward anarchy.
Felipe Sarti, representative of
the Community Studies and
Psychosocial Action Team,
demanded guarantees for the
members of that institution
assisting war victims, who have
suffered threats and
intimidations in recent weeks.
