New Concessions Bill by April
Costa Rican legislators are
preparing to discuss a new
concessions bill and have it
approved by April 2007, a
national concession council (CNC)
official said.
The bill will be sent to
congress tomortow, Monday 4
December and is expected to be
passed by April at the latest,
the official said.
CNC has long worked with other
government authorities in the
modification of the country's
current concessions law. Bill
proponents believe that the new
measure will allow for greater
economic development throughout
the country via concessions of
the transport infrastructure
systems.
Costa Rican president Óscar
Arias visited Chile in November,
where he learned about the
southern country's concessions
system. Arias said the Chilean
model creates great
possibilities for development
and he expressed interest in
having a similar system
implemented in Costa Rica.
Authorities are looking to
concession a number of transport
infrastructure facilities, such
as ports Limón and Moín, as well
as the country's highway and
railway networks and San José's
urban train system, the CNC
official said.
