Energy in Nicaragua, from Bad to
Worse
Nicaragua went from bad to worse
Friday as limited gas supplies
were added to persistent water
and power shortages.
Adding to the domestic energy
crisis, Tropigas de Nicaragua
Company is struggling with
serious difficulties delivering
supplies to a population already
bruised by power outages.
The Nicaraguan Energy Institute
has threatened it with economic
sanctions because Tropigas
promised a solution this week,
but its prolonged deficit led to
wide-spread speculation, said El
Nuevo Diario.
President Enrique Bolaños is
trying to fill the gap through
arrangements with companies in
Honduras and El Salvador.
The Republic´s General
Comptroller urged to annul the
contract with the Spanish
company Union Fenosa
(electricity) for breach of
contract.
The decision relied on
unjustifiable violations that
caused up to 30 percent losses
in domestic electricity services
in July and August.
