Arias Tenure Positive for 44% in
Costa Rica
Many adults in Costa Rica are
satisfied with their president,
according to a poll by
CID-Gallup. 44 per cent of
respondents rate the performance
of Óscar Arias Sánchez as good
or very good.
In the February presidential
election, Arias, of the National
Liberation Party (PLN), received
40.92 per cent of all cast
ballots, barely defeating Ottón
Solis of the Citizens’ Action
Party (PAC), who came in second
with 39.80 per cent.
Arias headed the government from
1986 to 1990, and was able to
run again after the Costa Rican
Legislative Assembly opted to
bring back presidential
re-election in 2003. He was
sworn in for the second time in
May.
Arias has advocated for the
ratification of the Tratado
Libre de Comercio (TLC) - the
Central American Free Trade
Agreement (CAFTA).
His campaign platform called for
the annual construction of
16,000 new homes, and adding 400
officers to the country’s police
force.
Earlier this month, Arias
discussed his first 100 days in
office, declaring, "The main
difference this time around is
that the agenda is completely
domestic and internal. Twenty
years ago, before we could do
anything for Costa Ricans, peace
was essential. Now we must focus
on laying down the foundation
for a more egalitarian and
inclusive society."
