Man Drowns Trying To Cross
Raging River On Bicycle
José Abel Mayorga López, 43
years old, apparenlty had a
death wish. Or at least that is
what it appears like to the
authorities, as the man died
attempting to cross the Río
Grande after a heavy rain.
The man was dragged 800 metres
(1/2 mile) by the strong
currents in the area near
Casitas, Nicoya.
The vendor of chayotes in the
small community was seen enter
the river and did not heed to
the calls of neighbours and
began peddling at full speed to
beat the swollen river.
"Hey, where are you going, the
water is too high", one
neighbour said he yelled out to
the man who did not look back
and was quickly swept up by the
water and disappeared from his
sight.
Others say they saw the man
shortly before entering the
river sitting at a nearby bar
and had a few drinks, enjoying
the "fruits" of his labour.
Police, under the intense
rainfall, kept a lookout for the
man who was not to be seen. It
wasn't until the morning
daylight that a cousin of
Mayorga found the body that had
been pressed up against the tree
on the rivers edge. The bicycle
however was never found.
