Happy Mother's Day. Again.
Though today is the not the
"traditional" day for Mother's
Day, it is, however, the legal
Mother's Day holiday.
Banks, government offices and
most businesses are closed
today, as the legal holiday was
moved from last Tuesday, August
5, the "traditional" day for
honouring mothers in Costa Rica,
to the following Monday.
The change came from a decree by
the former administration that
moved midweek holidays to the
following Monday.
This year is the first year that
in the tradition of Mother's Day
that it is not "legally"
celebrated on August 15.
Nonetheless, most Costa Ricans
celebrated the day and honoured
their mothers several days back
and are taking today to enjoy
the day off work.
However, next year, like the
July 25th holiday, all will be
back to normal. The current
government has listened to the
people and has said it will move
the holidays - both the
Anexation of Nicoya and Mother's
Day - to the day the fall on the
calendar.
Just for clarity, the rest of
the "legal" holidays left in
2006; September 15, Dia de la
Independencia; October 12, Dia
de las Culturas (formerly, Dia
de las Razas); and Christmas,
will all be celebrated on their
day.
