Hunger Killing Colombian
Children
Malnutrition was the cause of
death for 39,000 Colombian
minors between 1998 and 2002,
meaning an average of three dead
children daily, an Externado
University study spread in this
capital on Thursday revealed.
The brief report also revealed
that malnutrition is the first
cause of death among minors
between 1-2 years of age,
accounting for 14 percent.
The death rate due to
malnutrition is four percent
among children between 0-1, and
seven percent for those from 5-9
years of age.
The study showed that the
possibility of malnutrition
death in rural areas is 243 per
1,000 inhabitants.
Uraba Gulf, the Caribbean and
Pacific Coastal regions, the
Southern Adean region, Amazonia,
and the Orinoco River region are
the highest areas with
hunger-related mortality rates.
